Phoenix Mercury Overcome Big Deficit to Clinch First Victory of the Season Against Chicago Sky
PHOENIX (AP) – The Phoenix Mercury showcased resilience on Tuesday night, rallying from a 16-point deficit to secure their first victory of the season against the winless Chicago Sky, finishing with a score of 94-89.
Star player Satou Sabally led the charge with 20 points, while rookie Kitija Laksa made a significant impact, contributing a season-high 18 points. Alyssa Thomas exhibited her versatility, recording 10 points, 15 assists, seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. With this achievement, she surpassed Tamika Catchings to reach 12th place for career assists in WNBA history, boasting a total of 1,503.
The Mercury faced a challenging start, as the Sky, fueled by strong performances from Angel Reese (13 points, 15 rebounds), Ariel Atkins (a season-high 21 points), and Courtney Vandersloot (15 points, 11 assists), built a 16-point lead in the third quarter. However, a timely three-pointer from Laksa ignited a 12-2 run, narrowing the gap to just four points at the close of the third period.
In the fourth quarter, Sabally’s driving layup flipped the momentum, giving the Mercury their first lead since the opening moments. Back-to-back three-pointers from Monique Akoa Makani and Laksa sealed the deal, firmly establishing a 80-75 lead.
As the Mercury look to build on this victory, they prepare to host the unbeaten Minnesota Lynx on Friday. Meanwhile, the struggling Chicago Sky aim to regroup ahead of their game against the Dallas Wings on Thursday.
