Prom-Goers Celebrated as Heroes for Rescuing Family from Fire

A group of New York teenagers is being recognized as heroes for their quick actions in rescuing a father and his two daughters from a blazing garage fire. The incident occurred in Marcy, a small town with a population of around 8,700, shortly after the teens returned from their junior prom at Whitesboro High School on May 17. Aiden Kane, 17, first noticed the fire and was seen in cellphone footage yelling, “Your house is on fire!” to alert the family.

Initially mistaking the glow for a celebratory bonfire, Kane and his friends—Morgan Randall, Donato Jellenich, and Tyler Sojda—drove closer and quickly recognized the danger. Kane encouraged the family to evacuate, reassuring the children as they exited. Fire Chief Jared A. Pearl credited Kane’s leadership and the teens’ prompt response for averting what could have been a tragic situation. Jellenich promptly called 911, while Randall stayed with the family to offer support.

The firefighters confirmed that the family was safely evacuated before the flames reached the main part of their home, and fortunately, no one was harmed. Reflecting on the event, Sojda noted that comforting the frightened children resonated with him, as he has a younger brother. Kane, who has accompanied his father—an EMS worker—on emergency calls, felt inspired to help others. Randall reiterated that they arrived at the right time to make a difference. Their brave actions underscore the importance of community and quick thinking in emergencies.
