Maryland Democrat Fuming Over Denial of Access to Deported Immigrant in El Salvador

Maryland Congressman Returns After Failed Visit to Deported Migrant

Washington, D.C. — Rep. Glenn Ivey has returned to the U.S. after an unsuccessful attempt to meet Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a deported illegal migrant and suspected MS-13 gang member, in El Salvador. Ivey, who characterized his experience as “stonewalled,” faced bureaucratic hurdles that thwarted his plans to check on Abrego Garcia’s welfare following his deportation in March.

Abrego Garcia has become a flashpoint in the immigration debate, with Republicans accusing him of being involved in human trafficking and domestic violence, while Democrats assert he was denied due process. Rep. Ivey criticized the El Salvadoran authorities for the lack of access, as he had arranged through U.S. embassies for a meeting, but was met with resistance and told he needed a permit located 90 minutes away. “This type of treatment, especially directed at an international delegation, is unacceptable,” he stated.

Ivey, who funded the trip personally, aims to ensure that Abrego Garcia’s rights are protected in U.S. courts. He noted that local reports indicated a widespread denial of visitation permits, even to family members of detainees. “It was a clear run around,” he added.

The situation has prompted other Democrats, including Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, to express concern over Abrego Garcia’s treatment. They argue he has been unfairly characterized and advocate for his due process rights.

As tensions in the immigration landscape persist, Rep. Ivey also highlighted the conditions for approximately 250 Venezuelans jailed in El Salvador after deportation, asserting, “That’s un-American.” The contrasting narratives surrounding Abrego Garcia reflect the broader national debate on immigration and justice.
