Transforming Health in Arizona: ASU Researchers Tackle Stroke Rehabilitation and Heart Disease

Press Release: ASU Researchers Awarded $2 Million for Innovative Health Solutions

Arizona State University’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering has received over $2 million from the Arizona Biomedical Research Centre (ABRC) to address pressing health challenges affecting Arizonans. Five faculty members will spearhead innovative research in diverse fields, from nanotherapeutics to soft robotics.

Among the recipients, Assistant Professor Kuei-Chun "Mark" Wang is developing nanoparticles designed to combat atherosclerosis, a precursor to cardiovascular disease. His project, which enjoys a $750,000 grant, aims to create drug delivery systems that mimic white blood cells for targeted treatment.

Meanwhile, Associate Professor Mehdi Nikkhah is utilizing a “tumor-on-a-chip” approach to personalize cancer treatments, focusing on glioblastoma. His collaborative project, also funded with $750,000, seeks to improve drug delivery across the blood-brain barrier.

In mobility innovation, Associate Professor Wenlong Zhang is working on soft robotic exosuits to assist stroke patients, integrating AI for customized support. Additionally, Assistant Professor Xiangfan Chen is advancing multimaterial 3D printing for synthetic tissue creation, while Assistant Professor Wanxin Jin enhances surgical robotics with AI to improve dexterity and safety.

These pioneering projects exemplify ASU’s commitment to transforming healthcare through engineering.
