Phoenix Suns Narrow Coaching Candidates to Nine
The Phoenix Suns are making strides in their coaching search, as they have identified nine potential candidates, according to reports from NBA insiders. In the latest episode of the Haynes Briefs podcast, Chris Haynes outlined eight candidates that have advanced to the second round of interviews. This coaching hire will mark the Suns’ third coach in as many years, and the first under new General Manager Brian Gregory.
The eight reported candidates include Sean Sweeney, David Fizdale, James Borrego, Johnnie Bryant, Jordan Ott, Steve Hetzel, Micah Nori, and Dave Bliss. Additionally, Chris Quinn, an assistant with the Miami Heat, has also been mentioned as a candidate, bringing the total to nine. Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro confirmed that the Suns aim to narrow the list to three finalists within the next week.
The candidates each bring a range of experiences. Sweeney currently serves as an assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks, while Fizdale has coaching experience with the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks, alongside a two-year stint as a Suns assistant. Borrego has worked with the New Orleans Pelicans and previously as a head coach in Charlotte. Other candidates, like Nori and Bliss, have extensive backgrounds with multiple NBA teams.
The Suns are reportedly seeking a coach with youth and a defensive background who can build a disciplined program and connect effectively with the team’s star players. This focus on accountability and a structured approach reflects the franchise’s desire to establish a long-term vision under new management. As the Suns approach the final stages of their search, fans eagerly await who will take the helm for the upcoming season.
