Phoenix Mercury Guard Kahleah Copper to Miss Start of Season After Knee Surgery
Phoenix, AZ – The Phoenix Mercury announced Saturday that guard Kahleah Copper has successfully undergone surgery on her left knee and will be sidelined for the first four to six weeks of the WNBA season. This development is a significant blow for the team, as Copper was a standout player during the 2024 season, averaging 21.1 points per game—ranking her third in the league—along with 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Her impressive performance earned her a spot as an All-Star for the fourth consecutive year.
Additionally, forward Natasha Mack will be out for two to three weeks due to a lower back injury. Mack, who played a vital role as a key reserve last season, averaged 3.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, starting in 11 games when teammate Brittney Griner missed time.
Copper’s absence will put increased pressure on fellow All-Stars Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas, who are gearing up for their first season with the Mercury after being acquired in offseason trades. Both players will need to step up in Copper’s absence as the season progresses.
Copper was also a member of the U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team that captured the gold medal in the recent tournament, further establishing her as one of the top talents in the league. Following the 2024 season, she earned a spot on the All-WNBA Second Team, solidifying her reputation.
The Mercury are set to kick off their season against the Seattle Storm at PHX Arena this Saturday at 7 p.m. Fans will be watching closely as the team adapts to these injuries and strives to maintain their competitive edge.
