Greer Fire in Arizona Consumes More Than 18,000 Acres

Greer Fire Advances Amidst Ongoing Battle by Firefighters

GREER, Ariz. (NBC KYMA/KECY) – For the fifth consecutive day, over 500 firefighters are working diligently to contain the Greer Fire in eastern Arizona, which has expanded by more than 18,000 acres due to strong winds.

Tiffany Davila, Public Affairs Officer with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, confirmed that while winds tested containment lines, they are holding firm. The challenging terrain and dry conditions have been exacerbating the flames, pushing the fire into canyons and drought-affected areas.

Governor Katie Hobbs visited the fire’s origin and noted the destruction of four homes and two outbuildings, prompting her to declare a state of emergency. "This community has been hard hit, increasing their resilience and unity," she remarked.

Residents near the fire remain on edge. Eagar’s Carl and Beverly Smith opted to evacuate, expressing concern over potential embers igniting their home. Meanwhile, Jerry Porter, a long-time Eagar resident, has chosen to stay, expressing confidence in the safety of his house while hoping that the fire lines hold.

With red flag wind conditions anticipated, fire officials urge patience among affected residents as the battle against the Greer Fire continues.
