Newark Airport Troubles Continue: Ground Delays and Over 80 Cancellations

Travel disruptions continued at Newark Liberty International Airport on Monday, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reporting an average departure delay of 19 minutes expected until 9 p.m. ET. By 9:30 a.m., over 45 flights were delayed, and more than 80 had been canceled according to FlightAware data. These issues followed a challenging weekend that included a ground stop on Mother’s Day. Passengers expressed concern over the airport’s ongoing problems, with some suggesting systemic changes might be necessary, starting at Newark.

Recent radar outages on Friday and Sunday exacerbated the situation. The FAA cited the Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) network based out of Philadelphia as the source of these disruptions. On Friday, there was a brief blackout of radar screens affecting some sectors shortly before 4 a.m. EDT, and on Sunday, a 45-minute ground stop was attributed to FAA equipment outages. These incidents involved a telecommunications issue at Philadelphia TRACON’s Area C, prompting the FAA to slow flight traffic to ensure system stability.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy acknowledged the concerns raised over the Newark situation, attributing the issues to telecommunications glitches and outdated monitoring systems. He assured the public of the airport’s safety while indicating a reduction in capacity for the upcoming weeks. Duffy stated that he would gather airlines serving Newark to discuss these challenges. As the airport continues to struggle with operational issues, passengers remain vigilant and hopeful for improvements.
