Arizona Diamondbacks Welcome Back Relief Pitcher Kendall Graveman
PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks are poised to boost their bullpen as relief pitcher Kendall Graveman is set to make his return during the upcoming series against the San Francisco Giants. Graveman, who underwent shoulder surgery last season and started this year on the injured list due to a lumbar strain, has completed two successful rehab outings with Triple-A Reno.
Manager Torey Lovullo expressed optimism about Graveman’s imminent return. “He’s checked every box possible, so we feel good about it happening here sooner than later,” said Lovullo. Graveman was observed in the clubhouse at Chase Field ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers, hinting at his readiness for action.
Having signed a one-year deal worth $1.35 million at the start of spring training, Graveman’s experience could be a much-needed asset for the D-backs, especially with their recent bullpen struggles. Since April 17, the team’s relievers have recorded a 6.11 ERA, one of the worst in the league, exacerbated by injuries to key pitchers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez. Puk is on the 60-day IL, while Martinez is working to regain his form after being sidelined with shoulder fatigue.
In his rehab outings with Reno, Graveman pitched two scoreless innings, showcasing his potential with a fastball averaging 95 mph. “Excited to be back and felt good,” Graveman said. “I want to help win at the big league level.”
As the Diamondbacks gear up for a crucial three-game series at Oracle Park starting Monday, Graveman’s return could be pivotal in bolstering the team’s playoff aspirations. The organization is expected to announce corresponding roster moves as his comeback draws near.
