Press Release: Arizona Collects Over 3 Tons of Unused Medications on National Drug Take Back Day
PHOENIX — In a significant health initiative, Arizona collected more than 3 tons of unwanted and expired medications during National Drug Take Back Day on April 26. Authorities reported that the state’s 56 collection sites gathered 6,257 pounds of prescription drugs for safe disposal, as announced by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Nationally, a total of 620,321 pounds of unused medications were turned in across 4,590 collection sites. Since the inception of the event in 2010, the Take Back Days have successfully removed over 19.8 million pounds of medications from circulation, emphasizing the importance of responsible drug disposal. These events occur biannually, typically on the last Saturdays of April and October.
In addition to the designated Take Back Days, Arizonans can permanently dispose of unnecessary medications year-round through drop boxes located in pharmacies, hospitals, and various businesses throughout the state. The DEA offers a searchable online directory for these locations.
