Baltimore, MD – Ed Hale Sr., a 78-year-old Baltimore native and retired banker, has officially declared his candidacy for the Maryland governorship in the 2026 Democratic primaries. Hale, known for his tenure as chairman and CEO of 1st Mariner Bank and his role in developing the Canton Waterfront, has an extensive history in both the banking and shipping sectors. However, Hale’s past has not been without controversy; in 2011, he faced charges for carrying a loaded gun in his luggage at BWI Airport.
Hale announced his gubernatorial campaign in his childhood neighborhood, reflecting on his commitment to Maryland despite contemplating relocation due to high taxes and government issues. Advocating for improvements in the state’s business climate, he criticized recent business departures and the juvenile justice system, emphasizing the need for more stringent consequences for young offenders.
"I did not want to leave because I am all in for Maryland," Hale stated, proposing a reduction in taxes as a potential solution to the state’s fiscal challenges.
Hale also critiqued Governor Moore, suggesting a lack of focus on Maryland due to perceived presidential ambitions, as Moore’s approval ratings dip, particularly among independent voters.
