Arizona Mother Graduates from College After Overcoming Homelessness

Michelle Solano: A Journey from Adversity to Graduation

GLENDALE, Ariz. — In a moving display of perseverance, Michelle Solano graduated Friday from Estrella Mountain Community College, receiving her Associate’s Degree in Applied Science and Organizational Management. This achievement comes after a tumultuous journey that began when she was kicked out of her parents’ house at just 15.

Despite the challenges of being a single mother of three and dropping out of high school to secure employment, Solano remained determined. Living on the streets with her first child, she found support from her grandparents, who inspired her to pursue education. In 2001, she took a custodial position at Estrella Mountain, where the desire to further her education ignited.

Seeing her youngest child on the brink of dropping out motivated Solano to take night classes while juggling work. "I wanted to show her that I could go to school and work a full-time job," she said. Now, as the first in her family to graduate college, Solano plans to continue her studies at Northern Arizona University.

With a heartfelt tribute on her graduation cap to her late grandparents, Solano aims to demonstrate to her children and others that achieving dreams is possible, no matter the obstacles.
