Baltimore, MD — Nko Okina Solomon, an environmental engineer originally from Nigeria, is making waves in the world of clean water access while based at Morgan State University. As a dedicated community advocate, Solomon utilizes her expertise to enhance public health by developing innovative solutions to prevent water pollution.
Solomon’s journey began in her hometown of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, where she witnessed the detrimental effects of pollution on daily lives and local economies. In the Obagi community, she led soil rehabilitation projects alongside farmers, aiming to restore land vital for their livelihood. "It was inspiring to see communities coming together to find solutions," Solomon stated, underscoring the significance of her work in environmental restoration.
Her experiences in Obite, where she monitored wastewater systems to ensure safe drinking water, fueled her commitment to creating accessible water treatment solutions. Now, at Morgan State, Solomon is pioneering research in nanotechnology to design portable, low-cost water filters tailored for communities lacking infrastructure. Her innovative materials can identify and eliminate contaminants before they pose health risks.
"With nanotechnology, we can selectively target toxic substances and remove them efficiently," she explained, highlighting the transformative potential of her research. Solomon envisions these solutions having a significant impact in rural Nigeria, where access to clean water remains a challenge.
In addition to her lab work, Solomon collaborates with organizations such as OSHA and the Maryland Department of the Environment to bridge the gap between scientific research and community needs. "We can’t keep waiting for pollution to happen before we act. The real solution is to stop problems before they start," she said.
As Solomon’s work continues to evolve, it promises to not only enhance water safety but also foster healthier, more resilient communities globally.
