Justin Martinez Begins Throwing Program, Aiming for Swift Return
PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Justin Martinez has officially kickstarted his throwing program, with manager Torey Lovullo revealing that he could be back on the mound for a bullpen session this weekend. Martinez has been sidelined since May 1 due to right shoulder inflammation, which led to a significant drop in his velocity.
Lovullo expressed optimism about Martinez’s recovery, noting that if the young pitcher continues to meet his milestones and feels healthy, he could return shortly after his 15-day injured list stint. On Thursday, Martinez threw at a distance of 90 feet, a positive sign for his rehabilitation.
While the exact issue with Martinez remains somewhat unclear—an MRI showed no damage—Lovolllo referenced the possibility of "dead arm" syndrome, a common condition among pitchers. He emphasized that without physical damage, the focus now is on regaining Martinez’s confidence and refining his throwing mechanics.
"We need to ensure his delivery is sound and his release point consistent," Lovullo stated, acknowledging the importance of proper technique as they work through Martinez’s recovery.
This season, Martinez has recorded an impressive 2.70 ERA over 12 games, securing three saves. His absence, along with fellow reliever A.J. Puk, who is dealing with left elbow inflammation, has prompted Shelby Miller to assume closing duties temporarily.
In related news, reliever Kendall Graveman, who has yet to debut for the Diamondbacks due to a back injury, pitched 14 effective pitches for Triple-A Reno on Wednesday. Lovullo confirmed that Graveman’s health is promising, indicating he could throw again soon.
As the Diamondbacks navigate a demanding stretch of games—10 out of 16 without a break—they’re considering a six-man rotation to give their pitchers some much-needed rest.
Ahead, the Diamondbacks will face the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have solidified their pitching lineup for the upcoming series.
