Men’s Basketball Among 10 Arizona Sports Achieving Perfect APR Scores in 2023-24

Arizona Wildcats Achieve Perfect Academic Progress Rate for Third Consecutive Year

The Arizona men’s basketball program has achieved a flawless NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 1,000 for the third consecutive season in 2023-24. This remarkable feat was matched by nine other Arizona athletic programs, emphasizing the university’s commitment to academic excellence. Announced on Tuesday, the NCAA’s annual report highlighted that the men’s basketball team, along with women’s cross country and soccer, received “Public Recognition Awards” for being in the top 10% of their sport over four years.

Under the leadership of fourth-year coach Tommy Lloyd, the men’s basketball team has consistently excelled academically, boasting a multi-year APR score of 994, which ranks third among Big 12 schools. The only better scores belong to Houston’s perfect 1,000 and Colorado’s 995. Notably, the Wildcats only fell short of a perfect score during their first season in 2021-22, when they registered a 979 due to player departures.

In addition to men’s basketball, the women’s cross country and soccer programs also recorded perfect APR scores. Other Arizona teams achieving 1,000 include men’s swimming and diving, and eight women’s programs—cross country, golf, gymnastics, softball, soccer, beach volleyball, tennis, and triathlon.

Arizona’s athletic department noted that five programs set or matched their multi-year APR records, reinforcing their academic achievements in conjunction with sports performance. The men’s basketball program recorded its highest APR score since 2015, demonstrating a significant commitment to both academic success and athletic competition.

The NCAA’s APR offers a “real-time” measurement of student-athlete retention and eligibility, impacting the future standing of programs. It’s a commendable achievement for the Arizona Wildcats, reflecting the intertwining of education and athletics.
