Looking to Save Money? Here’s How Tariffs and Inflation Could Benefit Arizona Thrift Stores

Press Release: Resale Market Thrives Amid Economic Pressures in Phoenix

PHOENIX, AZ — Amid rising tariffs and inflation, the resale market is witnessing a significant boom as consumers seek budget-friendly alternatives. Shannon Erickson, director of the Assistance League of Phoenix thrift boutique, notes that the trend has intensified since the pandemic began. "There’s a shift in perception; shopping resale is now trendy and enjoyable," she remarked, highlighting that denim priced at $16-$18 in their store contrasts sharply with typical retail prices of $100-$200.

The growing demand has led the Assistance League to expand operations into a nearby building, with all proceeds supporting Valley youth in Title I schools. Similarly, St. Vincent de Paul reports increased foot traffic and donations across its four Phoenix thrift stores, a notable trend during what is usually a slower shopping season.

Capital One research indicates that younger generations, especially Gen Z, are pivotal in this resurgence, expected to drive two-thirds of secondhand market growth in the next five years. The demographic’s preference for unique, eco-friendly finds is reshaping shopping habits, with 64% of Gen Z shopping secondhand before considering new items.

This shift signifies not only a monetary saving but also an environmentally conscious lifestyle choice.
