Gallen Shines as Diamondbacks Down Mets 5-1
PHOENIX, AZ — Zac Gallen etched his name into the record books Tuesday, becoming the first Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher this season to complete seven innings during a dominant 5-1 victory over the New York Mets at Chase Field.
Gallen, fresh off a six-inning performance against the Mets in Queens, showcased his elite form again, allowing just one earned run on two singles. He retired 12 of the last 13 batters he faced, striking out six in total.
“It’s kind of shocking,” Gallen remarked about his milestone. “I felt like we’ve had some really good outings. Hopefully, it’s a sign of good things to come for our staff.” His only struggles came in the third inning, where he faced a brief scare after walking three batters, including Pete Alonso, who drove in New York’s only run.
Arizona’s offense rallied after being blanked early by Mets starter David Peterson. The Diamondbacks scored two runs in the fourth and added three more, highlighted by a two-run homer from Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who has surged at the plate, now hitting .305 over his last 15 games.
“He’s gaining confidence, and that’s what we need from him,” said manager Torey Lovullo.
Relievers Kevin Ginkel and Shelby Miller closed out the game without any further drama.
The Diamondbacks (19-17) will take on the Mets again Wednesday at 12:40 p.m., after this series finale, Arizona will host the Los Angeles Dodgers for four games. The matchup features D-backs right-hander Merrill Kelly facing off against Mets ace Kodai Senga.
Catcher Gabriel Moreno was scratched due to soreness but is considered day-to-day. The game can be heard on 98.7 FM and the Arizona Sports app.
