Corbin Burnes Receives Cortisone Shot for Shoulder Inflammation, Eyes Return Against Dodgers
PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Corbin Burnes is addressing shoulder inflammation with a cortisone shot, marking the first such treatment of his career. The right-hander missed a start on Monday, which he noted was a rare occurrence since early 2021 during his time with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Burnes reported feeling "naggy" discomfort that worsened after reaching 60 pitches in his last few outings. He emphasized the importance of his health and performance, stating, “The right call was to get over the hump now instead of being effective for three or four innings.” Burnes aims to be efficient for six to seven innings rather than struggling through later stages of games.
Following an MRI confirming only inflammation, Burnes has continued his throwing routine and plans to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday. If successful, he is likely to make his next start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.
Burnes has been a durable player, ranking among the top five in MLB for starts and innings from 2022 to 2024. He signed a six-year, $210 million contract with the Diamondbacks, prioritizing his health and reliability. Manager Torey Lovullo noted that while Burnes was eager to pitch, he understood the long-term necessity of addressing the issue.
Despite some struggles this season, including a 3.58 ERA over six starts with a 20% strikeout rate and a career-worst 12.1% walk rate, Burnes has maintained a strong performance, allowing two or fewer earned runs in four starts.
With Burnes on the mend, the Diamondbacks continue their series against the New York Mets Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. Fans can tune in to 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app for live coverage.
