BNSF Railway Faces Local Concerns Over Proposed Logistics Hub in Wittmann, AZ
WITTMANN, AZ — A large crowd gathered Tuesday evening in Wittmann to discuss BNSF Railway’s plans for a massive intermodal facility and logistics park stretching across 4,000 acres next to US 60. The company has submitted a re-zoning request to Maricopa County, which is set to vote on the proposal in August.
Residents voiced significant concerns about the project, primarily focusing on potential increases in traffic, noise pollution, and water usage. Laura Deaver, a local resident, expressed her frustration, highlighting the disruption from year-round operations. Kirby Anderson echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the project’s potential impact on surrounding residential areas, including Sun City and Phoenix.
Despite the worries, BNSF claims the project will create over 70,000 jobs and enhance economic opportunities while improving transportation efficiency in the region. BNSF’s General Director of Public Affairs, Lena Kent, stated that the company is addressing community concerns by including features like a 400-foot buffer and analyzing local road and groundwater conditions. BNSF aims to reassure residents that it’s not increasing train traffic but providing a transportation solution for anticipated growth.
