Trump Administration States Harvard Will Not Receive New Grants Until It Complies with White House Requests

Harvard University is facing significant consequences from the Trump administration, which has announced that the institution will not receive any new federal grants until it addresses a series of demands. This decision is a major escalation in the administration’s longstanding conflict with the Ivy League school, previously highlighted by a freeze on $2.2 billion in federal grants. Along with a push to revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status, the administration is emphasizing its stance against what it perceives as liberalism and antisemitism on campus.

An Education Department official stated that Harvard must demonstrate responsible management and comply with federal criteria in four areas: antisemitism, racial discrimination, academic rigor, and viewpoint diversity, before becoming eligible for future grants. These issues have been at the forefront of Trump’s education policies, and negotiations with the federal government will be required for Harvard to move forward.

The administration’s demands entail policy reforms, including measures to manage protests and enhance diversity of thought among faculty members. Education Secretary Linda McMahon criticized Harvard for allegedly enrolling foreign students who demonstrate contempt for the U.S., claiming the university has undermined the nation’s higher education system.

Harvard’s president, asserting the institution’s independence, has resisted the government’s demands and previously initiated legal action to contest the funding freeze, arguing that it violates First Amendment rights and certain provisions of the Civil Rights Act. Harvard, which has a substantial $53 billion endowment, relies on federal funding for 10.5% of its revenue, excluding financial aid. As this confrontation unfolds, it highlights the ongoing political tensions surrounding higher education in the U.S.
