Scottie Scheffler Sets Scoring Record at Hometown CJ Cup Byron Nelson
McKinney, Texas (AP) — Scottie Scheffler made headlines on Sunday by matching the PGA Tour’s 72-hole scoring record, finishing the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at an impressive 253, eight strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. With a final round of 63, Scheffler concluded the tournament at 31 under par, tying the record previously set by Justin Thomas in 2017 and equaled by Ludvig Aberg in 2023.
Scheffler was on track to break the record but faltered on the par-3 17th, committing a costly chip error that led to a bogey. He attempted a birdie on the last hole for the record but narrowly missed. Despite this, he held a comfortable eight-shot lead throughout the event, with Erik van Rooyen finishing second at 23 under, three strokes clear of Sam Stevens.
The reigning Masters champion had set the pace from day one, opening with a remarkable 10-under 61 on the par-71 TPC Craig Ranch. Fellow Texas alum Jordan Spieth surged to a final round 62 to finish fourth, marking a competitive moment for both local stars.
This victory represents Scheffler’s first this year, a notable achievement following a prolific run of ten wins from 2020 to May 2023, including two Masters titles. Cradling his one-year-old son, Bennett, after the win, Scheffler became the first wire-to-wire winner of the Nelson since Tom Watson in 1978.
Moreover, Scheffler’s 253 score shattered Steven Bowditch’s previous tournament record of 259 set in 2015. His dominant performance marked the second-largest victory margin at the Nelson, offering a glimpse of the potential for further successes in his burgeoning career.
