Ryne Nelson to Take the Mound for Diamondbacks Against Mets

Diamondbacks to Start Ryne Nelson Against Mets as Rotation Adjusts

In an exciting move, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced that manager Torey Lovullo has named Ryne Nelson as the starting pitcher for the series opener against the New York Mets on Monday at Chase Field. This comes after Corbin Burnes was sidelined due to right shoulder inflammation.

This start marks Nelson’s first of the 2025 season, having previously operated out of the bullpen. He is expected to throw between 80-85 pitches. Last season, Nelson made a significant impact, starting 25 games with a record of 10-6, a 4.24 ERA, and 125 strikeouts. In 2025, he has pitched 17 innings across seven games, maintaining a 5.82 ERA and striking out 20 batters.

In his most recent outing against the Mets, Nelson displayed his potential with four hitless innings, though the Diamondbacks ultimately fell 8-3.

Additionally, the Diamondbacks made a roster adjustment prior to their thrilling 11-9 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies, calling up left-handed pitcher Tommy Henry from Triple-A Reno while optioning righty reliever Scott McGough. Henry, who previously pitched from the bullpen last season, has had a challenging start in Reno, posting an 8.53 ERA and a 1.86 WHIP in six games.

As fans gear up for the matchup, the Diamondbacks will look to leverage Nelson’s talent and Henry’s fresh presence on the roster. The game is set to kick off at 6:40 p.m. MST, and fans can catch the action live on the Arizona Sports app, 98.7 FM, or online.
