An elderly cat survived a nearly 400-foot fall at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, where her owners, Matthew Nannen (45) and Bailee Crane (58), tragically lost their lives. Their bodies were discovered by visitors on April 29, approximately 380 feet below a lookout point. Preliminary investigations suggest the couple may have fallen while climbing over a railing at Inspiration Point on April 28 or 29. Nannen and Crane were reportedly living out of a U-Haul and had recently traveled from Arizona, with their last known residence in Florida.
The surviving cat, now named Mirage, was found in a muddy, soft-sided carrier and arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary with fractured ribs and matted fur. Despite her injuries, Mirage has been responding well to care, with the sanctuary reporting that she is eating and drinking independently. Judah Battista, the chief sanctuary officer at Best Friends, expressed amazement at the cat’s survival, noting it is “remarkable” for her to live through such a fall.
Mirage, at 12 years old, has received attentive care from the veterinary team and is expected to make a full recovery. The sanctuary described her as a “very sweet girl,” indicating a hopeful future for the cat following the tragic incident.
