Arizona Governor Declares Heat Awareness Week Amid Rising Temperatures

YUMA COUNTY, Ariz. – Governor Katie Hobbs has officially proclaimed this week as Heat Awareness Week in Arizona, aiming to promote safety during the state’s sweltering summer months. The Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS) emphasizes the importance of awareness as extreme heat poses significant risks to public health.

In 2023, Arizona recorded a staggering increase in heat-related incidences, with 990 deaths and over 4,000 illnesses. However, there is a slight silver lining; the total number of heat-related deaths in the state decreased to 975 last year, marking the first reduction in more than five years.

The AZDHS reported that temperatures in Phoenix and Tucson reached record highs last year, with Phoenix experiencing 70 days of temperatures exceeding 110 degrees Fahrenheit and Tucson surpassing 112 days above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The scorching heat persisted well into fall, reflecting a disturbing trend in rising temperatures.

As extreme weather continues to affect the region, AZDHS encourages residents to stay informed and prepared. For more information on services available during Heat Awareness Week, visit the AZDHS website for resources available in both English and Spanish.
