Sovereignty Triumphs at the 151st Kentucky Derby, Mott Celebrates Second Victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — In a thrilling showdown under rainy conditions, trainer Bill Mott’s Sovereignty surged to victory in the 151st Kentucky Derby, marking a momentous occasion for both horse and owner, Godolphin. This win not only ended Godolphin’s 0-for-13 streak in the Derby but also reaffirmed Mott’s prowess in the sport. Sovereignty triumphed over 3-1 favorite Journalism in a fierce stretch battle, securing the victory without controversy this time, unlike Mott’s first win in 2019.

The Hall of Fame trainer praised the horse’s capabilities, stating, “This one got there the right way.” Sovereignty’s time was 2:02.31 for 1 1/4 miles, and he paid $17.96 at 7-1 odds to win. He became the 20th horse to claim the Derby with a name beginning with ‘S,’ showcasing a rich lineage from Godolphin, owned by Dubai’s Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Amidst the triumphant atmosphere, Alvarado recorded his first Derby win after overcoming an injury that sidelined him during Sovereignty’s last race. “It’s more than a dream come true,” Alvarado said, reflecting on the anticipation leading up to the race.

As the Derby unfolded, the wet and sloppy track posed challenges, with notable entries like Citizen Bull, representing six-time Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert, setting the pace but finishing 12th. Rain-soaked spectators donned plastic ponchos, adding a unique touch to the iconic event.

Baeza, finishing third, and Final Gambit in fourth, along with Owen Almighty in fifth, rounded out the top positions, amidst a competitive field of 19. Mott’s victory further cemented his reputation, as he basked in the joy of a well-deserved win that will stay with him for years.
