Maryland Governor Wes Moore Declines Trip to El Salvador Amid Deportation Controversy
Maryland Governor Wes Moore has confirmed he will not travel to El Salvador following the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man embroiled in controversy over alleged gang affiliations and due process issues. This announcement came during the White House Correspondents Dinner, where Moore expressed his intentions to focus on enjoying the evening instead of discussing the ongoing situation.
The question arose after Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen’s recent trip to El Salvador aimed at securing Garcia’s release. Van Hollen’s visit drew significant media attention, highlighting the tensions surrounding Garcia, who was accused of ties to the MS-13 gang and had been mistakenly deported by the Trump administration. The U.S. Supreme Court has mandated that steps be taken to facilitate Garcia’s return, but El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has indicated he would not release him due to concerns about his gang connections.
While Moore sidestepped questions about Garcia’s potential return to the U.S., he previously expressed his support for Van Hollen’s efforts on social media, emphasizing the importance of due process and constitutional adherence in Garcia’s case. Moore stated last week, "This is a case about due process… Are we going to follow the Constitution or not?" His office later reaffirmed that no plans were in place for him to visit El Salvador.
The deportation has sparked significant outrage among Democrats, resulting in visits to El Salvador from various lawmakers, including Reps. Maxwell Frost and Robert Garcia, to advocate for Garcia’s situation. As the matter continues to unfold, the involvement of political figures raises questions about immigration policy and due process rights.
