In a significant move towards their professional futures, several students from St. Clair County have committed to the Diesel Technology program at Wallace State Community College during the NC3 Letter of Intent Signing Day. The event saw local students including Elijah Dick and Henry Dole of Ashville, Jackson Allen of Leeds, and Jared Harris of Steele putting pen to paper to formalize their choices in Applied Technology.

Jerry Murcks, Dean of Applied Technologies at Wallace State, emphasized the importance of this commitment, likening the event to athletic signing days. “It represents more than just signatures; it’s a promise to invest in the future,” he said.

Industry representatives also spoke passionately to the students about the growing demand for skilled labor. Rodney Richie from Snap-on Industries reminded the signers that they will be stepping into roles vacated by an aging workforce, with many from the Gen X generation nearing retirement. Will Simonton from Festo highlighted Wallace State’s excellence in technical education, underlining their role as leaders in providing valuable NC3 certifications.

Christina Holmes from Wallace State’s Center for Career and Workforce Development encouraged students to maximize their college experience by utilizing available resources, including networking and internship opportunities.

During the ceremony, Travis Kress from the Applied Technologies program awarded Jonathan Rodriguez, a dual-enrollment welding student from Hanceville High School, a $1,000 NC3 Skilled Trades-3M Transformational Scholarship.

The signing day was an inspiring testament to the bright future awaiting these students in the field of diesel technology and beyond, with various programs also recognizing commitments in agriculture, aviation, construction management, and culinary arts among others.
