Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Confirms He Turned Down Plea Deal Before Sex Trafficking Trial

Sean “Diddy” Combs confirmed on Thursday that he has rejected a plea deal from federal prosecutors concerning charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and prostitution. This decision paves the way for his upcoming trial in New York, which includes jury selection starting Monday. During a court hearing, U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian inquired if Combs had declined the government’s offer, to which he responded affirmatively. Combs, dressed in olive clothing and accompanied by his legal team, has pleaded not guilty.

Defense attorney Marc Agnifilo indicated that the legal team collectively decided on the rejection of the plea deal, which Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey noted would have afforded Combs a lighter sentence than facing a guilty verdict at trial. The judge emphasized the need for a jury selection process that maintains juror privacy, especially regarding personal experiences with sexual and domestic abuse.

Concerns were raised about media influence on potential jurors, prompting the court to implement measures for private discussions. The juror selection aims to narrow the pool from an original 600 down to 45 in a timely manner. Additionally, the trial has garnered significant media attention, leading Agnifilo to request a new survey question about jurors’ exposure to trial-related information.

Several lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct against Combs, including one from former girlfriend Cassie Ventura, form part of the case. Ventura accuses him of years of abuse and coercion. Combs has denied all allegations and settled some lawsuits shortly after they were filed, while his legal team seeks to limit public comment by opposing counsel. The trial, described as complex and closely followed, is poised to start amidst these debates over media coverage and legal conduct.
