Press Release: Volunteers Tackle Period Poverty in Arizona Amid Rising Costs
TEMPE, AZ — As essential as food for many, menstrual products like pads and tampons in Arizona are still subject to a luxury tax, further burdening those facing poverty and homelessness. Last week, volunteers from Women4Women Tempe gathered at the Phillips Law Group to assemble nearly 200 supply bags filled with menstrual products for women in need.
Ilce Blancarte expressed the urgency of the cause, emphasizing that access to these products is not a luxury but a matter of health and dignity. "These should be free for every girl in this country," she stated. Co-founder Kay Wright noted that the packing parties not only provide essential supplies but also foster community conversations, breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation.
First-time volunteer Isabella VanKampen highlighted the unfairness of the luxury tax, asserting that period poverty is a serious issue that often goes unnoticed. As costs continue to rise, initiatives like Women4Women are crucial in ensuring that menstrual health remains a priority. Over the coming weeks, the organization plans to distribute more than 250 menstrual supply kits to those in need, reaffirming their commitment to empowerment and dignity for all.
