Press Article: Transforming Lives Through Drug Treatment Program in Nigeria
Maiduguri, Borno State — “Getting medical help to stop using illicit drugs saved my life,” says 41-year-old Aliu Musa, who battled drug abuse for 15 years. His addiction disrupted his personal and professional life, leaving him in constant pain and cognitive disarray. "When I was on drugs, I struggled to complete daily tasks," he recalled.
Fortunately, Aliu found hope through a free treatment program at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Maiduguri, part of a broader intervention to combat drug abuse in Nigeria. “My life has improved since I started treatment. I’m performing better at work, and my marriage has strengthened,” he shared, emphasizing the profound impact of counseling and skill-building sessions provided in the program.
Recognizing drug use as a public health crisis, the World Health Organization (WHO) promotes comprehensive harm reduction strategies. These initiatives target the prevention of diseases such as HIV and hepatitis while enabling individuals to lead drug-free lives. In collaboration with the Nigerian government and various partners, the WHO has launched the Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program to provide essential medical support to drug users.
Dr. Salaudeen Jimoh, Chairman of the National Harm Reduction Technical Working Group, highlighted the significance of MAT in aligning Nigeria with WHO’s global harm reduction recommendations. He praised the Gombe state government for spearheading this initiative, which could serve as a model for nationwide expansion.
With increasing support and education, the Nigerian government aims to equip drug users with access to vital health services. "Medication-Assisted Treatment is now available, and I encourage those in need to seek help," concluded Aliu, advocating for a community that empathizes and supports rehabilitation efforts.
