Arizona Diamondbacks Eye Potential Trade for Cardinals Closer Ryan Helsley
Phoenix, AZ — The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly interested in acquiring St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, a likely trade candidate as the MLB season progresses, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. Arizona’s pursuit of Helsley has been ongoing since the winter, although the Cardinals were initially hesitant to let go of their elite closer.
As the season unfolds, the Cardinals find themselves at a disappointing 12-16, with Helsley receiving just six save opportunities. This change in circumstances may open the door for trade negotiations. In contrast, the Diamondbacks are currently performing better with a 15-13 record but have struggled in the bullpen, suffering five blown saves out of 13 opportunities—tied for the third most in the National League. Their bullpen holds a combined ERA of 4.64, ranking sixth-worst in the league.
Helsley, the 2024 NL Reliever of the Year and a standout with 49 saves last season, has made 10 appearances in 2025, managing to keep opponents scoreless in eight outings. His current ERA stands at 3.60, bolstered by a formidable strikeout-to-walk ratio of 8:4, despite some inconsistencies earlier in the season.
In addition to the Diamondbacks, the Philadelphia Phillies have also shown interest in Helsley, though they are unlikely to relinquish their top two prospects for his services.
The Diamondbacks’ bullpen challenges have been exacerbated by A.J. Puk’s elbow inflammation, although relief is on the horizon with Kevin Ginkel and Kendall Graveman making progress in their recoveries from injuries. Ginkel recently pitched a scoreless inning in a minor league game, while Graveman is set to continue his rehabilitation.
As the trade deadline approaches, Arizona’s interest in Helsley could provide a crucial boost to their struggling bullpen.
