Heber Community Heroes Rescue Stuck Horse from Mudhole

HEBER, Ariz. — A collaborative effort by local residents led to the successful rescue of a horse trapped in a mudhole in Heber. The incident occurred at Decker Wash near the junction of Forest Road 124 and 146, where the horse succumbed to mud as a waterhole began to dry out.

Photographer Betty Nixon, known for her work documenting the Heber Wild Horses, spotted the distressed animal while out with fellow photographers. Concerned about the drying water tank, Nixon had requested a check on the location, leading to the discovery of the trapped mare.

In response, Nixon rallied approximately six volunteers, and together they worked for an hour to free the horse from her muddy predicament. The entire rescue operation was chronicled on the Friends of the Wild Heber Horse Facebook page, highlighting the community’s compassion and teamwork.

This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the dedication locals have for their wildlife, showcasing how individuals can come together to make a difference in critical situations.
