The wife of a Salvadoran father, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongly deported from Maryland, was forced to move to a safe house after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) posted a court document with her address on social media. Jennifer Vasquez Sura expressed fear for her safety and that of her three children after the document was shared with DHS’s 2.4 million followers.
Critics have accused the Trump administration of denying Abrego Garcia due process by introducing unproven criminal allegations against him and deporting him to El Salvador despite a court order blocking his removal for humanitarian reasons. The administration has labeled him a violent MS-13 gang member and a “woman beater,” citing a protective order Vasquez Sura filed in 2021 after an incident in their car, which she later dissolved.
Vasquez Sura stated that the incident was isolated and attributed it to the stress of Abrego Garcia’s immigration detention and their financial struggles. She emphasized that Abrego Garcia was trying his best for their family. Democratic officials and advocates argue that the administration’s actions were unjust and violated Abrego Garcia’s rights.
The DHS defended the decision to share the court document, stating it was a public record. Vasquez Sura’s move to a safe house highlights the potential dangers of exposing personal information in such a high-profile case. The Independent has reached out to DHS for further comment on the matter.
