Buffalo Startup ONSCREEN Aims to Combat Loneliness Among Seniors with Innovative Tech
Buffalo, N.Y. — ONSCREEN, a tech startup launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, has developed a groundbreaking product that turns televisions into automated communication hubs. This device allows users to make voice and video calls, send texts, and more, all through a simple HDMI connection. Founder and CEO Costin Tuculescu envisions ONSCREEN bringing people together globally, reminiscent of the futuristic worlds in "The Jetsons" and "Star Trek."
However, Tuculescu observed a significant trend: adult children, especially those around 50 years old, are purchasing the product for their elderly parents aged 75 and over, many of whom grapple with modern technology.
This month, ONSCREEN, in collaboration with the New York State Office of Aging, launched a pilot program to offer about 100 free devices to seniors. Funded by a $25,000 grant, the initiative aims to assess whether ONSCREEN can help alleviate loneliness and isolation among older adults. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention links social isolation to increased risks of dementia, stroke, and heart disease, emphasizing the pressing need for solutions.
Erin Mitchell, Senior Director of Community Engagement at AARP NY, highlighted the critical nature of addressing social isolation’s toll on physical and mental well-being. Although AARP is not involved in this specific initiative, they advocate for increased funding for home and community services, as nearly one in five Americans aged 65 and older experience social isolation.
Beyond basic communication, ONSCREEN features an AI companion that conducts wellness checks and medication reminders, potentially reducing emergency care costs by addressing health issues early. Tuculescu believes such technologies could ultimately save states millions in healthcare spending. For more information about the program, interested parties can apply online.
