Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly had to exit Sunday’s game against the Chicago Cubs due to right leg cramping. Kelly had been on a roll, retiring 16 batters in a row before experiencing discomfort while pitching to Seiya Suzuki in the sixth inning. After walking around the mound and shaking out his leg, Kelly made the decision to leave the game. Righty reliever Ryne Thompson stepped in for Kelly and finished the inning by retiring Suzuki.
The game had already been delayed twice due to weather, with a total of nearly two hours of delays before it even started. Despite giving up a run in the first inning, Kelly settled in and retired the next 16 batters before exiting the game. In total, Kelly pitched 5.2 innings, striking out five batters and giving up only two hits.
Fans can catch the rest of the D-backs-Cubs game on 98.7 FM or the Arizona Sports app. Kelly’s condition and availability for future games will be something for fans to keep an eye on as the Diamondbacks continue their season.
