Is Tush Push at Risk of Being Banned?

NFL team owners, coaches, and general managers are currently considering a potential rule change to eliminate the “tush push”, a play made popular by the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Green Bay Packers have proposed banning the play due to concerns about player safety and the pace of the game. Despite zero reported injuries from the play, Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott is leading the charge to get rid of it, citing concerns about player health and safety. Other coaches, such as Andy Reid and Mike Tomlin, are also open to discussing the safety implications of the play.

In addition to the potential ban on the “tush push”, other rule changes being considered include making the dynamic kickoff rule permanent and restructuring the playoff format. The expansion of instant replay to allow for more objective calls to be reviewed is also on the table. The NFL competition committee has recommended maintaining the kickoff rule introduced last year and possibly moving touchbacks to the 35-yard line to encourage more returns.

Looking ahead, the NFL is exploring the possibility of playing a game in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, along with upcoming international games in Brazil, Mexico, Germany, England, Ireland, and Australia. Flex scheduling for Sunday games to Thursday night has also been approved by NFL owners to provide more flexibility in the schedule. Stay tuned for updates on any rule changes in the upcoming NFL season.
