Former Marine Paul Whelan expressed his devastation upon learning that WNBA star Brittney Griner had been released from Russian detention, while he remained imprisoned. He was told that the U.S. had traded a convicted Russian arms dealer for Griner, leaving him behind. Throughout his imprisonment, Whelan maintained his spirits by singing the national anthem daily and was eventually released in a prisoner swap in August 2022.
During his five-year imprisonment in Russia, Whelan endured harsh conditions, including solitary confinement, corrupt guards, and poor quality food. Despite facing pressure to confess to false charges of espionage, Whelan remained steadfast in his denial.
Whelan emphasized the importance of strong diplomacy with leaders of rogue nations like Putin, stating that any U.S. president would struggle to deal with a leader like Putin. He also highlighted the need for resilience and refusal to give in to despair, even during the most challenging moments of his ordeal.
After his release and return to the U.S., Whelan shared his struggles with readjusting to regular life, including medical and dental issues and potential challenges finding employment. Despite his difficulties, Whelan expressed gratitude for the support he received from his community and remains hopeful about his future, even as he considers reinventing himself in his new reality.
