Despite Mistrial in Karen Read’s Case, John O’Keefe’s Family Continues Fight for Justice

Beth, a relative of the Boston police officer who was allegedly run down and killed by Karen Read, fully supports retrying Read after her murder trial ended with a hung jury. The legal saga began after the death of John O’Keefe in January 2022. O’Keefe’s body was found outside the home of a retired Boston police sergeant. Read was charged with second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a collision causing death. Prosecutors claim that Read backed into O’Keefe in her Lexus and left him for dead. Vehicle data showed she was near the home of the sergeant where O’Keefe was dropped off for an after-party. Read has maintained her innocence, with her defense alleging that a fight at the party caused O’Keefe’s injuries, and he was left outside by others. The defense has accused law enforcement officers of framing Read in the killing, but others do not believe there was a cover-up. A local blogger amplified the defense theory and criticized O’Keefe’s family for believing Read was guilty. The family felt deflated after a mistrial was declared, and they must now prepare for a retrial starting in early next year. Beth expressed the desire for the focus to remain on O’Keefe’s death, rather than on the defendant or the blogger. More than 60 people supported O’Keefe’s family during the trial, and they are looking toward justice for O’Keefe in the upcoming retrial.
